You are glad that you’ve decided to see Gdańsk for the first time. Today, you walk around the Old Suburb. That exceptional district with cozy atmosphere avoided destruction during the Second World War. You admire the nineteenth-century tenement houses on Embankment Square. Among the restored buildings, stands out a ruin that looks like it is about to fall apart. Once, it had to be stunning — you think.

[[MENU]]<h1>About the project</h1>
The Game of Gdansk project has been implemented under <a href="https://urbcultural.eu/">Urb Cultural Planning</a>, an international project, which is co-funded by the <a href="https://www.interreg-baltic.eu/">Interreg Baltic Sea Region</a>. It is dedicated to cultural planning in cities. There are 14 partners and 36 associated organisations from 7 Baltic countries who have been participating in the project. The organiser of the project is the <a href="https://www.nck.org.pl/en">Baltic Sea Cultural Center in Gdańsk</a>.
One of the project objectives is to activate the district of the Old Suburb (Stare Przedmieście) by implementing cultural activities in cooperation with its inhabitants. The Game of Gdansk is intended to incorporate the youth of Gdańsk into the process of a dialogue about shaping the common urban space and sustaining local communities. As a result of cooperation with young people, an interactive urban game will be developed by them in a form of a <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gamebook">GameBook</a> which will refer to the space and local history of the Old Suburb. The structure of the game will include elements of Minecraft, especially a mapped model of the district. The game will be accessible on a website and it will be possible to play it using computers and mobile devices.

[[All right! I will trust you.->3 HISTORIE]]
]
}I have lived in the Old Suburb since I was born and, as you can see, even after my death, I am not allowed to leave. I have always tried to help others and be a good person. Despite this, I cannot find peace. When I was 20, I got married and had two children: a boy and a girl. My husband never earned much, and it got really hard after the war. Often, I had to choose, if to buy bread or shoes for my children. We didn’t even have money for coal, so in winters we sat in our jackets under the feather quilts in the icy-cold flat. One day I saw an advertisement in the newspaper.
<div class="images-container">
<img src="https://gameofgdansk.eu/embankment-square-13/advertisement1.jpg" width="49%" style="margin-right:2%;">
<img src="https://gameofgdansk.eu/embankment-square-13/advertisement2.jpg" width="49%">
</div>
One of the inhabitants of Embankment Square needed domestic help and a babysitter. My children were already big enough, so I took this job. It was not an easy time for me. For the following years, I had to work from early morning to late evening. My son was strongly attached to my husband, so it didn’t affect him that, but my daughter really missed me. To this day, I cannot forgive myself for taking care of other children and not having time to take care of my own Joanna. But I did it for her own good. The woman became sad, and then she smiled: on the first of June, I would always take a day off as it is Children’s Day. We used to go to the festival held at the Żabi Kruk Harbour.
<img src="https://pl.gameofgdansk.eu/zasoby/images/zdjecia-wspolczesne/1-3.jpg" width="60%" class="centerIMG">
It was the happiest day of the year. The children took part in competitions, e.g. racing, jumping in sacks. Joanna had her favorite competition: there was a marked route — slalom. Not an easy one, with a spoon with an egg in your mouth! Joanna was second to none, she was first at the finish line every year. After the festival, we always went to Embankment Square to the monument of the Gdańsk Grenadiers for cotton candy.
<img src="https://pl.gameofgdansk.eu/zasoby/images/zdjecia-archiwalne/9-12.jpg" width="60%" class="centerIMG">
Unfortunately, it would be the only day of the year when I devoted my attention to my daughter. Years passed, and Joanna learned to take care of herself. One day I felt a strong pain in my chest. It was a heart attack. Because of my sudden death, we had no chance for reconciliation. I know she never forgave me for not being there when she needed it. Now I’m suffering a severe punishment for it — tears ran down Anna’s cheeks. I can’t remember her face. It is like a blank spot in all of mine memories. Even in the photos, her pretty face is blurred. I can’t stand it, and until she forgives me, I won’t remember what she looks like. The woman sank heavily into the armchair and hid her face in her hands.

[[Learn the story of John.->HISTORIA JANA]]John’s spirit was pacing restlessly up and down the room. He couldn’t stop even for a moment. He kept mumbling something under his breath. As he walked past you, you heard him repeating the same numbers over and over:
<h3 style="text-align:center;">(text-style: "fade-in-out")[2.1, 2.7, 1.7, 1.5, 2.7]</h3>
**(uppercase: "Mr. John!")** - you shout, trying to stop the circling man. Your hands pass through his spirit form as if through air.
He won’t answer you anyway — said Anna. John has been walking and walking like this for 55 years. During that time, he said nothing other than these numbers. Same numbers over and over again. I already know them by heart. I have no idea what they mean and neither does this poor man. I wish someone could finally explain this to him. I can’t stand this constant walking and mumbling anymore. It must be a terrible torment for him. You would think that he used to be such a serious and well-respected man. He was a math teacher at Primary School no. 7, the one opposite the Lowland Gate.
{<div class="wrap">
(cycling-link: bind $img, '<img src="https://pl.gameofgdansk.eu/zasoby/images/zdjecia-wspolczesne/18-0.jpg" width="60%" class="centerIMG">','<img src="https://gameofgdansk.eu/embankment-square-13/school.jpg" width="60%" class="centerIMG">')

He was teaching my son. All the students were afraid of him. He was very strict and demanding. When he retired, something happened to him, I think he got sick, he got mad. From then on, it was impossible to communicate with him as there was no chance for a normal conversation. When he died, he ended up here and has been walking in circles and mumbling those numbers ever since.

[[Learn the story of Peter.->HISTORIA PIOTRA]]Why are you here, Mr. Peter? — you asked a stooped man sitting in an armchair.
You can talk and talk, but he won’t reply anyway, ’said Anna. Peter has been here for almost 70 years but has not said a word for 39 years. Before he fell silent for good, he had told me his story. Peter ran a shop in the Old Suburb.
<img src="https://pl.gameofgdansk.eu/zasoby/images/zdjecia-wspolczesne/20-0.jpg" width="60%" class="centerIMG">
He was doing well. It was a profitable business. The better business went, the greedier Peter became. The more money he had, the more he wanted. One day, he decided to bury all his savings and hide them, so he wouldn’t have to share with nobody else. At first, he planned to tell his wife where he had hidden his treasure but kept put it off until several months passed. One frosty day in December, Peter was driving his car down Rzeźnicka street, the car skidded and that’s how Piotr ended up here. He’s been terribly stooped from the very doorstep, unusual for a man in his prime. It turned out that the burden of his money crushed him. His pockets are stuffed with coins, and on his chest he carries a bag with valuables collected over the years. For some time, he had the strength to get up, move and talk. But as the years went by, the weight became more and more difficult to handle. He has been silent for 39 years and has not left his armchair.

- Thank you, my child for your help.
- How long have you been living here? - you ask the old woman.
- Since I was a baby. It will be over 80 years now.
- I must find a place in the Old Suburb, somewhere near the Virgin, on the Buffalo Bastion side. Do you know what this can mean?
- Indeed, I know. We used to call these turrets at the Stone Lock virgins. When I was a child, we used to play, walking through the bulkheads between these turrets and fishing there. The virgin on the side of the Buffalo Bastion must mean the turret from the side of the Buffalo Bastion although we never said the Buffalo Bastion, only Kręcona.

You return to Embankment Square 13. You stop in front of a tenement house where the ghosts of Anna, Peter and John were imprisoned for decades. Finally, you’ll have some good news. You reach for the key which you found, but your pocket is empty. It was here just a moment ago — you think. You look up and through the window you can see Anna, John and Peter. Instead of torment, a gentle smile appears on their faces. Suddenly the door begins to disappear, and a wall grows brick by brick in its place. They will finally find peace — you thought and continued your journey.
